Pioneering the way LED lighting is powered and controlled

C3 Lighting pioneered Remote Power and Control of LED Illumination, also known as Distributed DC Power. In 2009 C3 Lighting, Inc. proposed that the LED should be considered simply one component of a lighting system, allowing a building’s illumination to be more easily configured as a network. In addition, the conversion of AC to DC power to drive a fixture’s LED’s should not be on or in a fixture, but in a central location. This eliminates LED drivers and the controls required for dimming and illumination color changes from fixtures. This model is the basis for C3 Lighting’s Remote Power and Control Network for LED Illumination.

Power & Control

We created our Power Distribution Module (PDM) to accomplish this task, integrating a microprocessor, digital current limiting, lighting control, energy monitoring, and communication in one package. The capability of the Power Distribution Module was further increased by adding spontaneous switching to emergency battery back-up, the ability to switch input power from AC to alternate energy sources such as Solar, Wind, etc. and DC power output for business and personal electronics. Our Power Distribution Module in effect creates a building’s DC Micro Grid and all the advantages of centralized DC power.

Removal of drivers and controls from fixtures eliminates multiple conversions from AC to DC power, increasing the overall efficiency of the lighting system and eliminating hundreds of lighting components from a building.
Class 2 DC power eliminates metal conduit and large gauge wire from most commercial lighting installations, greatly reducing the carbon footprint of a building.
The Power Distribution Module provides a single point for communication in order to control a building’s entire lighting network.
Fixtures without drivers and controls are smaller, cost less to ship and are easier to install.
The Microprocessor in the Power Distribution Module provides extreme control and custom configuration of the lighting network.
Convenient switching from AC power to alternate DC energy sources, such as Solar, Wind, etc.
Spontaneous switching to emergency battery back-up for the entire lighting network.
DC power is available for business and personal electronics.
Class 2 DC power is “Inherently Safe” per National Electric Code and cannot cause a fire nor electrocution.
